Various Roofing Material Choices
Wednesday, March 10th, 2010Asphalt Shingles are commonly used for residential roofing materials and are very cheap to buy. The two main choices in asphalt shingles are organic asphalt shingles or fiberglass asphalt shingles. Organic asphalt shingles have organic felt that is made from wood and paper fibers. On the other hand fiberglass asphalt shingles consists of fiberglass mat.
You can get both types of asphalt shingles in a large variety of colors, textures and grades. Fire ratings for both types of asphalt shingles are very different. Fiberglass shingles have got a Class A (highest level of fire resistance) rating whereas organic shingles have got Class C ratings. This difference makes fiberglass asphalt shingles a more popular choice than organic asphalt shingles.
Wood shingles and shakes have got natural look. In wood shingles and shakes, you can get cedar, redwood pine and other hard woods. Cedar is highly durable choice as it has got natural resistance to insect damage, moisture and other decaying things. Appearance of shingles and shakes is very different. Wood shingles have got a smooth and highly refined appearance. On the other hand shakes are thick and rough.
The biggest drawback of using wood roofing products is that they can’t resist fire at all unless given some special treatment. Some of the wood roofing products have got class C ratings and some have got no rating at all. Due to this drawback, wood shingles or shakes are restricted in many areas.
Roofing made of metal is durable, light in weight and weather resistant. You can get large varieties in metal roofing and they look somewhat like wood shingles or tile roofing. Metal roofs are highly fire resistant and have got class A fire rating. The age of metal roof is predicted to be at least 20 to 50 years or more.
Generally steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper and zinc alloys are used in metal roofing. The features and cost of metal roofing varies based on the type of metal used in making the roof. Usually, metal roofing is considered good for low slope roofs.
Slate is very strong, durable and highly expensive. Its installation is also very typical and the roofer should be highly skilled for installing a slate roof in your home. It is very attractive natural stone.
Tile is durable, attractive and available in many colors and styles. It comes in either clay or concrete varieties. Since tile is heavier than most other roofing choices, you will need to make sure whether your house can support it or not.
